Hello Friends,
Thank you for your support during the Give Big fundraising campaign. Since we did not meet our fundraising goal, we are extending our spring fundraising drive. We have made some important progress, but still have a big fight ahead as Clark County completes the final stages of its once-in-a-decade Comprehensive Plan Update.
- Public Participation: through our investment in community outreach and partnership building, we have boosted public engagement in Clark County government to unprecedented levels, as you may have noticed during recent key Comp Plan decisions.
- Mining: Our years-long legal fight to protect 330 acres of environmentally-sensitive forest land in Chelatchie from mining was a success. The ruling in our favor at the WA Court of Appeals established increased protections for the environment from mining going forward AND prompted the Clark County Council to take the step necessary to come back into compliance with state law by finally removing the Chelatchie Bluff surface mining overlay (SMO) ordinance. Furthermore, our advocacy to stop 3,000 acres worth of site specific requests for unnecessary mining in Clark County’s forests led to those options being removed from consideration in the Comp Plan Update.
We are proud of this work; however, the Clark County Council’s trajectory regarding the hasty agricultural lands study and their plan to come back into noncompliance with state law has put the county in extreme legal and financial jeopardy, and risks severe delay of implementing critical policies—on top of leaving the door open to the destruction of 519 acres of our precious and dwindling agricultural land. Friends of Clark County is the premier organization fighting on the frontlines for responsible land use policy here in Clark County.
