08 Aug Shoreline Master Program Update – Public Hearing Aug. 20th
Clark County Planning Commission will consider updates to the Shoreline Master Program (SMP) at a remote public hearing scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20th at 6:30 PM. To find out more about the changes and instructions on how to participate in the hearing, there is a wealth of information at these sites:
The periodic review of the SMP has been underway for about a year. Considered Goal 14 of the Growth Management Act (GMA), the Shoreline Management Act was enacted in 1971 nearly 20 years prior to the GMA in 1971. The county last completed a comprehensive SMP update in 2012.
This SMP sets forth what is allowable in the shoreline area of our rivers, lakes and wetlands. And if development is to occur, how its impacts can be minimized and mitigated. The intention of SMP is to protect the public’s water resources for their ecological values for future generations while allowing some development in particular water dependent development such as ports, docks, etc.
Friends of Clark County will be preparing detailed comments for the Planning Commission hearing and will also follow up when the Plan is considered for adoption by the County Council.
